신생아의 유방의 국소에 박테리아 감염이 생기면 유방이 곪고 고름이 잡힐 수 있다.
이런 국소 유방 감염병을 신생아 유방염 또는 신생아 젖유종이라 한다.
불결한 손으로 신생아의 유방을 만지거나 짤 때 유방에 박테리아 감염이 생기기 쉽다.
때로는 신생아의 유방이 이유도 없이 자연적으로 곪을 수 있다.
성인 여성에게 있을 수 있는 함몰 젖꼭지가 생기지 않게 예방한다고 신생 여아의 젖꼭지를 손으로 잡아당기는 관습이 있었다. 그런 잘못된 습관으로 젖유종이 생길 수 있다.
황색 포도상구균, A군 베타 용혈성 연쇄상구균, 대장균, 또는 그 밖에 다른 세균 감염으로 젖유종이 생길 수 있다([부모도 반의사가 되어야 한다- 소아가정간호백과]-제 25권 임신, 분만, 신생아 돌보기-유방염(유선염) 참조).

신생아의 유방염(젖유종)의 증상 징후

유방염을 일으킨 박테리아의 종류, 유방염의 중증도에 따라 증상 징후가 다르다.
신생아의 유방이 곪으면 유방이 빨갛고 붓고 아프다.
이 때 속히 적절히 치료해주지 않으면 유방염이 악화되고 심하게 곪을 수 있다.
고름이 잡히면서 고열이 날 수 있고 더 악화되면 패혈증이 생길 수 있고 생명이 위험할 수도 있다.

신생아의 유방염(젖유종)의 치료

갓 태어난 신생아의 유방을 불결한 손으로 만지지 말아야 한다.
일단 유방염으로 유방이 곪으면 적절한 항생제 주사로 응급 치료를 해야 한다.
젖유종을 앓으면서 고열이 나면 즉시 병원 입원 항생제 정맥주사로 치료받아야한다.
젖유종에 고름이 잡힐 때는 고름을 수술 빼야 한다.
신생아의 유방이 정상적으로 커졌을 때 불결한 손으로 커진 유방을 만지거나 젖을 짜서는 안 된다.

• Bacterial infection in a localized area of a newborn’s breast can cause the breast to become stuffy and collect pus.

• This localized breast infection is called neonatal mastitis.

• Touching or squeezing a newborn’s breast with unclean hands can lead to bacterial infection of the breast.

• Sometimes a newborn’s breasts may swell spontaneously for no apparent reason.

• It was customary to pull the nipples of newborn girls by hand to prevent the development of the inverted nipples that adult women may have. Such a bad habit can lead to lactation. • Staphylococcus aureus, group A beta-hemolytic streptococci, Escherichia coli, or other bacterial infections can cause mammary glands ([Parents should also become at least half-doctors – Encyclopedia of Pediatric Family Nursing] – Vol. 25 Pregnancy, delivery, and newborns Caring for – see Mastitis (mastitis)).

Signs, symptoms of mastitis in newborns

• Symptoms vary depending on the type of bacteria causing the mastitis and the severity of the mastitis.

• When a newborn’s breasts are stale, the breasts are red, swollen, and painful.

• If you don’t get proper treatment right away, mastitis can get worse and you can get really sick.

• The pus can collect and cause a high fever, which can lead to sepsis and life-threatening.

Treatment of mastitis in newborns

• Do not touch the breast of a newborn baby with unclean hands.

• Once the breasts are sore from mastitis, emergency treatment with appropriate antibiotic injections is essential.

• If you have a high fever while suffering from a breast abscess, you should be treated immediately with an intravenous antibiotic in the hospital.

• When pus is collected in the breast abscess, the pus must be removed surgically.

• When a newborn’s breast is normally enlarged, do not touch or express the enlarged breast with unclean hands.
