패혈증은 박테리아 감염이 전신의 혈액 속에 생긴 전신 감염병이다.
즉 뇌 속, 간장 속, 심장 속, 폐 속 등 신체의 모든 계통의 모든 장기 속에 있는 혈액 속에 세균이 감염되어 있고 거기에 염증이 있는 감염병을 패혈증이라 한다.
패혈증을 일으키는 박테리아의 종류는 여러 가지가 있다.
패혈증은 신생아들, 영유들, 유아들, 학령기 아이들, 사춘기 아이들, 성인들 모든 연령층에 있는 사람들, 누구에게도 생길 수 있는 아주 위중한 감염병이다.
적절히 응급 치료를 하지 않으면 이 병으로 대게 사망한다.
생후 1일부터 28일까지의 기간을 신생아기라고 한다. 신생아들이나 생후 29일부터 생후 90일 이전 영아들에게 생기는 패혈증의 원인이 되는 박테리아는 생후 3개월 이후 영아들이나 유아들, 학령기 아이들에게 생기는 패혈증의 원인 되는 박테리아의 종류와 다른 점이 많다.
이런 이유로, 생후 1~90일 기간 동안 신생아들이나 영아들에게 생길 수 있는 패혈증이나 뇌막염 등은 생명에 더 위중한 감염병이고 응급으로 진단 치료하지 않으면 쉽게 죽을 수 있기 때문에 여기 있는 정보는 소아청소년과 전문의들이나 엄마아빠들에게 상당히 중요한 정보라고 할 수 있다.
신생아들이나 생후 4개월 이전 영아들에게 패혈증이 있을 때는 뇌막염이 동시 생길 가능성이 있다.
병력, 징후 증상, 진찰소견, 소변 대변 혈액 뇌척수 액 등 피검 물로 적절한 세균검사를 즉시 해 진단하는 것이 보통이다.
필요에 따라 polymerase chain reaction (PCR), nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs),direct fluorescent antibody (DFA), immunofluorescence(antibody) assay (IFA), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), enzyme-linked fluorescent immunoassay(ELFA), enzyme immunoassay(EIA), Transcription Mediated Amplification (TMA), strand displacement amplification (SDA), DNA polymerase restriction endonuclease, IgA. 항체, IgG 항체, IgM 항체, IgE 항체, IgD 항체 검사를 할 수 있다.
직금부터 30 여 년 전에는, 출생 후 부터 생후 90일까지, 즉 생후 3개월 이전 신생들과 영아들에게 생겼던 패혈증의 주원인은 B군 연구균 박테리아이거나 그람 염색 음성 박테리아들이었다.
그러나 요즘, 그람 염색 음성 박테리아가 주원인이다. 또 그람 염색 음성 박테리아 중 대장균(E. coli)이 61%를 차지하고 그 외 원인 세균들의 22%는 황색 포도상구균 등 그람 염색 양성 박테리아였다는 연구가 있다.
생후부터~90일 까지 아기들에게 생긴 패혈증의 치료에 주로 써 왔던 항생제로 치료하면 그 패혈증은 잘 치료되지 않는 경향이 있다.

최근 유럽에서 다음과 같이 패혈증을 치료하라고 권장한다.

응급 치료 및 입원 응급 진단 치료를 하라.
피, 소변, 대변, 가래, 국소 병소에서 얻은 피, 고름, 뇌척수 액 등으로 세균검사를 하라.
적절한 피 검사, 가슴 X-사진검사, 대변, 소변, 뇌척수 액 등을 검사하라.
산소호흡, 기관 내관 삽입치료, 정상 혈압 유지 치료, 코르티코스테로이드제 혈관주사 치료, 강심제 치료, 정신안정제로 치료 하라.
필요에 따라 수혈치료, 수액 및 전해질 평형 유지 치료, 적절한 항생제로 치료 하라.
그 외 치료를 하라.
